The film is produced as part of project BG-RRP-11.020-0171-C01 – “The Humor of Bulgaria – History and Character of Bulgarian Comedy”, funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU instrument.
As part of the process of creating the documentary film dedicated to the history of Bulgarian comedy, a podcast format is also incorporated as an important complementary element of the overall project concept. Its role is not only to expand the content of the film, but also to provide an opportunity for a more in-depth exploration of themes, personalities, events, and phenomena related to the development of the comedic genre in Bulgaria. Through this format, space is created for a more detailed analysis of key moments in the history of Bulgarian humor, which cannot always be fully explored within the time limits of a film production.
The podcast is designed as a platform for discussions, commentary, and expert interpretation, featuring specialists connected to the subject—researchers, cultural analysts, historians, literary scholars, folklorists, theatre experts, journalists, as well as professionals from the fields of performing and comedic arts. Their participation allows for the presentation of diverse perspectives on the origins, evolution, and social significance of Bulgarian comedy. Special emphasis is placed on how humor reflects its era, public attitudes, cultural transformations, and changes in language, taste, and forms of public expression.
Individual episodes may focus on iconic figures and works, as well as on specific historical periods in which comedy developed under the influence of various social, political, and cultural factors. Particular attention is given to the transition from oral tradition and folk humor to theatrical comedy, literary satire, television formats, variety shows, stand-up comedy, and contemporary digital content. In this way, the podcast format contributes to building a more complete picture of the genre by tracing its development across different forms and environments.
An essential goal of this approach is to preserve and transmit knowledge about important and often underexplored or lesser-known moments in the history of Bulgarian comedy. The podcast allows for a more detailed presentation of facts, archival materials, cultural references, and personal narratives that enrich the main storyline of the documentary film. It also creates opportunities for more direct engagement with the audience and for reaching people interested in cultural heritage, Bulgarian arts, and the evolution of humor as a social and aesthetic phenomenon.
The inclusion of a podcast format within the project also serves another important function—to ensure greater depth and sustainability of the content. While the documentary film presents a complete narrative in an audiovisual form, the podcast enables the continuation of the conversation, thematic expansion, and the inclusion of additional viewpoints, analyses, and interpretations. In this way, the project extends beyond a single film production and evolves into a broader cultural initiative aimed at researching, promoting, and preserving the history of Bulgarian comedy.
By combining a documentary film with a podcast format, a richer and more multi-layered presentation of the subject is achieved. This model allows for both emotional impact through visual storytelling and analytical depth through expert discussion. As a result, the project creates content that not only informs, but also encourages broader public interest in the role of comedy in Bulgarian culture, its historical development, and its significance as a means of social expression, critique, and cultural identity.
